SUMMARY: The author and her colleagues used a Randomized Controlled Trial to study the value of Allopurinol,  a xanthine-oxidase inhibitor in the measurements of cognitive deficits pre and post stroke in 370 patients.  The authors state, "Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, reduces serum uric acid, which may have a role in the development of post-stroke cognitive impairment." They found "no evidence of an effect of allopurinol on cognitive outcome following a recent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack."
